Yr9 Towner Project

In creating a space for Year 9 pupils to become research partners with Towner Eastbourne, as we think ahead to the development of the Towner Seven Sisters site, we would like to invite schools to join us for two creative sessions:

Working with ceramic artist Carla Wright and students from the University of Sussex to experience, make and respond to the materials found at the Towner Seven Sisters site. Towner Eastbourne wants to respond to Anecdotal evidence from art teachers around falling numbers of pupils choosing art for GCSE, and the struggle for schools to find space in a tightly packed curriculum for creative making.
We also want to support schools and teachers with covid catch up, social skills development, and the joy of making together, as we support year 9 to have a stake in the cultural future of the town and to engage with making which might impact their thinking when it comes to GCSE choices and art as something they may want to incorporate into their future. We want to support their cognitive development by giving them the opportunity to develop “intelligent hands” through making together.
This project will inform future project planning for larger scale engagement in 2025/26.
FUTURE DATE | Wednesday 5th March 2025 | Towner Eastbourne | Time TBC
Working with a writer and students from the University of Sussex to imagine and respond to Up from Paradise (speculative fiction commissioned by Towner, and written by Alinah Azadeh imagining a future visit to Towner Seven Sisters). This day will be great for students who enjoy creative writing and storytelling.
