Towner Eastbourne wants to respond to Anecdotal evidence from art teachers around falling numbers of pupils choosing art for GCSE, and the struggle for schools to find space in a tightly packed curriculum for creative making.
We also want to support schools and teachers with covid catch up, social skills development, and the joy of making together, as we support year 9 to have a stake in the cultural future of the town and to engage with making which might impact their thinking when it comes to GCSE choices and art as something they may want to incorporate into their future. We want to support their cognitive development by giving them the opportunity to develop “intelligent hands” through making together.
This project will inform future project planning for larger scale engagement in 2025/26.
